How would you describe your bedroom, “Relaxing, Calm, a Retreat”. Or do words like “Cluttered, Mix Matched, Unfinished” come to mind? Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place where one can unwind, relax, and recharge.
I have found that many people especially younger people and people with families tend to put “their” space off and make the rest of the home or the kids space a priority. The next main reason people have not prioritized decorating their bedroom is they think that will have to spend a lot of money to create this relaxing space but that does not need to be the case. As a mom of four I can tell you how important it is to have a space that I can go to relax and rest, not feel more overwhelmed.
So in this blog post I want to help you create a bedroom that helps you unwind at the end of the day and a space you can relax in during the day time. Here are five fundamental rules to follow when designing a relaxing main bedroom, ensuring your personal oasis is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
Five Rules to Follow When Designing a Relaxing Bedroom
1. Choose a Calming Color Palette
If you know me you know my first rule is of course about color. The color palette of a bedroom significantly influences the ambiance and overall mood. When I am designing a bedroom I tend to go two ways.
First, opt for soft, muted colors that promote calmness and serenity. Shades of blue, green, and neutral tones like beige, gray, and soft whites are great choices. These colors are known for their soothing properties and ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Second I will opt for deep/moody colors and accent with lighter decor. I still stay with shades of blues, greens, and neutrals but just in a deeper tone.
I suggest to avoid overly bright or bold colors, as they can be stimulating and may hinder relaxation. If you love vibrant hues, consider incorporating them as accent colors through accessories like throw pillows, artwork, or rugs. This way, you can enjoy a pop of color without overwhelming the tranquil environment.
2. Prioritize Comfort with Quality Bedding
This would be my husbands number one rule. A quality mattress and bedding is crucial for a restful night’s sleep and overall comfort. Invest in high-quality sheets, pillows, and a mattress that provide the right support and coziness. Natural materials like cotton, linen, and bamboo are excellent choices for their breathability and softness. I like to layer beds with plush blankets and comforters to add extra warmth and comfort, creating a cozy and inviting space.
When selecting bedding, pay attention to thread count and fabric type. A higher thread count generally indicates a softer and more durable fabric. Additionally, consider hypoallergenic options if you have allergies or sensitive skin. Yes you will spend a little more but you also do not need to break the bank. At the end of this blog I have linked a few great options.
3. Furniture & Decor (Declutter)
The style of furniture is not what matters but the amount of pieces in your space. A lot of times our bedrooms can be the dumping grounds for the extra furniture that we do not know what to do with. But a cluttered bedroom can be overwhelming and counterproductive to relaxation. Embrace a minimalist approach to furniture by selecting pieces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Avoid overcrowding the room with unnecessary furniture or decorative items. Let’s be honest the piles of things that go to our room to be “put away”, the clothes piled on the chair need to find their place. We do not need to display ever thing our kids have made us (a few are okay or switch them out). Instead, focus on a few key pieces that enhance the room’s functionality and style. Your bed, nightstands, dressers, and a comfortable chair is really all you need. Opt for multi-purpose furniture, such as a storage bench at the foot of the bed or nightstands with drawers, to keep the space organized and clutter-free.
4. Create a Soothing Lighting Scheme
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a bedroom. We want to aim for a lighting scheme that promotes relaxation and calmness. Incorporate multiple light sources, such as bedside lamps, wall sconces, and floor lamps, to create a layered lighting effect. This approach allows for versatility and the ability to create different moods.
Consider installing dimmer switches to control the brightness and adjust the lighting according to your needs. Avoid harsh, overhead lighting as it can be too stimulating. Instead, opt for warm, soft light bulbs that emit a gentle glow, perfect for winding down at the end of the day.
In this rule I also consider window treatments. Window treatments can be just important for lighting in your space as the actual light fixtures. When selecting window treatments you need to think about them form both a functional and decorative side. We personally love blackout blinds on our bedroom for that one day a week we can sleep in and for those afternoon naps that I wish would happen more. We also have light filtering panels that can still let light in and are also great for adding color and softness to the space..
5. Add Personal Touches and Natural Elements
Finally you should add personal touches and natural elements. Incorporate items that reflect your personality and bring you joy, such as family photos, artwork, and books. These personal touches create a sense of comfort and belonging, making the space truly your own.
Introducing natural elements, such as plants, can also contribute to a relaxing environment. I love live plants in any space because they not only improve air quality but also bring a touch of nature indoors, promoting a sense of calmness. Choose low-maintenance plants like snake plants, succulents, or peace lilies that thrive in indoor conditions and require minimal care. If you do not have a green thumb add realistic faux plants.
So when you are designing your relaxing bedroom remember these 5 rules, color, comfort, minimalism, lighting, and personal touches. By choosing a calming color palette, investing in quality bedding, incorporating minimalist furniture, creating a soothing lighting scheme, and adding personal touches and natural elements, you can transform your bedroom into a sanctuary. The goal is to create a space where you can unwind, relax, and recharge, ensuring a restful night’s sleep and a space you can retreat to.
